FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What?
    Private Swim Lessons
  • Why private lessons?
Private swim lessons provide students the individual attention not received in traditional group lessons -- resulting in faster learning and stronger stroke development. Private lessons allow for lesson plans that are unique to each learner, as all students learn at varying paces.
  • Who?
Children (18 months +) and Adults Swimmers of all levels and abilities (Beginners and Advanced) I specialize in working with anxious swimmers, swimmers with special needs, advanced swimmers looking for stroke refinement, adults who are learning to swim for the first time, and adults who have experienced water related trauma.
  • Where?
My Personal Pool (Wethersfield, CT) OR your pool (see next question for more details.) My pool is heated! Cold kids are no fun to teach haha! It is also inground.
  • Can you come to my pool?
Amanda only teaches lessons at her pool, but Maura is a travel swim teacher who will come to you. Prior to booking at-home lessons, Amanda will need to know your address (to factor in travel time, which may increase the cost-per-lesson), pool type/depth, whether the pool is heated, and who the lessons will be for. Due to scheduling availability and the factors above we may not be able to accommodate at-home lessons.

  • Do you teach adults?
Yes! I have worked with many adults. Learning to swim as an adult can be challenging, scary, and intimidating. I work with you to ensure you feel comfortable and move the lesson at on appropriate pace for YOUR learning.
  • What if the weather is bad on the day of my lesson?
Unfortunately, we can not control the weather! Thunder, extremely cold/rainy conditions will cause lessons to be canceled for safety. YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED! We will reschedule and hope for a sunny day! If the weather is forecasted to be bad I will contact you to cancel.
  • What if I need to cancel?
Life happens, if we need to reschedule no problem. If cancelations become a pattern I will need to charge for the missed lesson. Please notify as soon as you know you are not able to make your lesson.
  • What is the youngest age you work with?
18 months! It is great to start learning to swim early. (During covid - parent must hold child for lessons while I give instructions.)
  • Where do I go when I arrive?
When you arrive please walk around the right side of the house to the backyard.
  • What should I bring?
Bathing suit, towel, a positive attitude, and goggles! (Sunscreen and hair ties are also recommended.) If you ever forget a towel, sunscreen ext., please don’t hesitate to ask me for what you need.
  • Should I book a 60 minute lesson or 30 minute lesson?
It depends on the swimmer! Some students love to swim and won't want to get out of the water after 60 minutes. ...Other swimmers not so much, so 30 minutes might be just right for them! A 60 minute lesson can also be very exhusating for some. However, if a goal is to increase endurance, a 60 minute lesson might be recommended. Together we can make a plan and decide what is best for your swimmer and adjust accordingly.
  • How often should I book lessons?
It depends! I recommend coming consistently at least once a week for the entire summer, for all ages. Two-Three times a week would be great, but I know that can be a lot to fit into people's schedules. Some people will also book everyday for two-weeks, which is also beneficial. It really depends on what your schedule looks like and what you are trying to get out of swim lessons. Consistency and practice is key! Swimmers need to build their muscle memory in the water. Together we can make a plan and decide what is best for your swimmer and adjust accordingly.
  • How long will it take to learn to swim?
It depends on the swimmer! After our first lesson I will be able to gauge how long it will take. By seeing you in the water I can evaluate your starting level, comfort level, or how fast of a learner you are. I don't recommend stopping regular swim lessons until students are strong and independent swimmers (typically older).
  • How do I book?
Booking online is quick, easy, and convenient! Go to the "Book Online" tab, select the desired service, then choose the best day and time the works for you. Fill in your information and click book! You will then receive a confirmation email.
  • How many swimmers can be taught in a lesson?
Swimmers can only be taught in the same lesson if they are at the same level/age. Students with varying skill levels CAN NOT be taught together for their safety and learning benefit.
  • I have more than one child/swimmer?!
Swimmers can only be taught in the same lesson if they are at the same level/age. Students with varying skill levels CAN NOT be taught together for safety and their learning benefit. If you have two swimmers of varying levels, book as 1 swimmer 60 minutes (30 minute lessons each and $10 discount).
  • Is your pool heated?
Yes! Cold kids are no fun to teach! The pool is kept at 80 degrees or above.
  • Can I stay, or leave, during my child's lesson?
It is up to you! You are more than welcome to stay and watch the lesson. You can also leave and come back. Whichever you prefer.
